The Technical University of Dortmund is located a short distance from the city center of the Westphalian metropolis of Dortmund. The University of Dortmund was founded in 1962 and currently has a student population of 25,000 students and 2,000 faculty. The university offers a wide range of courses in many academic areas and is a regional leader of scientific research. While studying at Dortmund students will take classes along side of German students in German. In addition, the Technical University of Dortmund is a member of the ConRuhr consortium which also includes the University of Duisburg-Essen and the University of Bochum. John Carroll University students have the possibility of taking courses at all three universities, which are all within easy commuting distance via the S-Bahn (local trains).
